PS/2 KVM Switches

Q. What is the hot-key combination for switching ports?
A. The standard method for switching ports via Hot-key controls is pressing the left Control key twice, followed by the number of the port you’re switching to. Example: Control + Control + 2, should switch the KVM to Port #2.

Q. What is the hot-key combination for pulling up the On-Screen Display menu?
A. If your KVM features OSD, pressing the left Control key three times consecutively should initialize it.

Q. What do I need to cascade multiple KVM switches?
A. For cascading multiple KVM switches, no special cabling is needed. You will need the standard PS/2 KVM cable to connect the console ports on the slave switch to one of the available KVM ports on the master switch. Note: The master switch should have an equal or greater number of ports than the slave switch.

Q. How can I connect a computer that only has USB ports and no PS/2 ports.
A. If you’re trying to connect a computer without PS/2 ports to a PS/2 KVM switch, you’ll need to purchase the ConnectPRO PS/2 to USB adapter, part number: MT-606-1.

USB KVM Switches

Q. What is the hot-key combination for switching ports?
A. Unfortunately, the only current USB KVM switch to support hot-key controls is the PRO-12UL. To switch ports on the PRO-12UL, you can press the left Control key twice, followed by the letter ‘a’ key. This will switch to the opposite KVM port, or you can identify what specific port by pressing the left Control key twice, followed by the port number, 1 or 2.

Q. Can I cascade multiple KVM Switches?
A. The USB KVM switches cannot be cascaded.

Q. How can I connect my USB KVM switch to a computer that has PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports?
A. As long as the computer has available USB ports, you can use those instead of the PS/2 ports.

Q. What if I want to use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo with the KVM switch?
A. That should not be a problem. Make sure that the keyboard and mouse function on all computer, when directly connected, then try connecting through the KVM switch.

Q. What can I do if I’ve hooked everything up, and although the video works, I get no keyboard and mouse functionality on any of the connected computers?
A. Here are some steps to go through if your KVM switch has lost keyboard and mouse functionality.

  1. Disconnect the power and all cables and connections from the switch.  There should be no lights illuminated on the KVM.  Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  2. Reconnect the Power adapter to the KVM, followed by the  Keyboard, Mouse, and monitor.
  3. After those console connections are attached, connect one of your computers back to Port 1 of the KVM.
  4. Make sure the keyboard and mouse are working on that computer, then connect the second computer.
  5. At this point, the KVM has been completely reset, and it should be back in operable condition.
